Food has a unique way of uniting people, especially in a bustling city like Bengaluru with its abundance of dining options. Food enthusiasts in the city are finding joy in sharing meals with like-minded individuals and forming lasting friendships. The Dastarkhwan Club, a food community in Bengaluru, has been organizing vibrant meet-ups where members explore local eateries together.
The co-founder of the community, Akash Devaraju, emphasizes that the bond formed over food runs deep, encompassing diverse interests united by a shared love for food. Tharini Thakur, another member of the club, notes that members are eager to discover the origins and cultural significance of different foods. Their community has grown significantly, with over 60 members in their WhatsApp group and more than 600 RSVPs waiting to join their events.
The concept of the Dastarkhwan Club originated from a casual gathering for an Iftaar meal, where the sense of camaraderie sparked inspiration for more such gatherings centered around food. According to Akash, the name was adopted after a colleague referred to their outings as a "Dastarkhwan."
For Abhishek Gupta, who participates in various communities in the city, the Dastarkhwan Club offers a personal and enriching experience unlike other groups he has encountered. He shares his recent experience of cooking with a Kashmiri host, highlighting the value of learning about different cultures through the act of sharing a meal."According to him, immersing oneself in their culture and unique traditions is essential. Meghna, another group member, appreciates the individuality and careful planning of each event. She also enjoys the presence of knowledgeable individuals from the specific culture at every event. The essence of community dining lies in the following experiences:
- Rozana: Visit a restaurant where the owner shares detailed insights into the culinary history.
- Safarnama: Join a food walk group and explore various food streets to savor different cuisines.
- Mehfil: Experience the hospitality of people from diverse backgrounds as they open their homes to share a taste of their culture."
